Agriculture at CHS

Agriculture is an important feature of Cootamundra High School particularly as we are based in a rural area.  It is offered to students as an elective in the junior and senior school, and to date has had a strong following across the school.

Cootamundra High possesses an agriculture plot where a variety of plants and vegetable crops are grown, steers are prepared for showing and a number of sheep and chickens are raised.

In particular the recent development of the Show Team, has had a positive infusion into another side of agriculture.  This is predominately designed for students to be part of a team and be involved in Junior Judging, Junior Parader’s and Beef Handling experience at Agricultural shows.

The Agriculture Show Team has a strong reputation in school competitions with many awards to its name from throughout NSW. Participation in the Agriculture Show Team is open to students in Years 7-12 and is offered as an Extra Curricular Activity and continues to operate with dedication from the students involved.

  • Students in Year 8 undertake units of work in Agriculture.
  • Agriculture is offered in Years 9 and 10 for the School Certificate
  • Agriculture is offered (according to demand) in Years 11 and 12
  • Primary Industries is offered as a vocational education course and provides advanced accreditation for students undertaking TAFE courses in field related to Agriculture.

The Show Team

What is it all about?

Put simply, the Agriculture Show Team is all about promoting and encouraging Cootamundra High School Agriculture to both our students and our local community.

Our faculty is involved in many aspects of Agriculture, and the Show Team provides the means to display our products or activities - be they be involved with plants, animals or students themselves.

We regularly compete in local, regional and Agriculture Shows and we have had a lot of success in recent years.  However, these shows are merely the end result.  Many, many hours of work go into animal preparation, and this demands a major commitment from all of our students.

Our students regularly then compete in parading competitions, field days and community events.

All current students are welcome to be involved in the Show Team and parents are always encouraged to attend our activities whenever possible.
